How long is this bar actually going to last?

There isn't one exact answer.

The lifespan of a handmade soap bar depends on its size and formulation, but also on how often you use it, how much lather you create, whether you use it directly on the body or with a shower accessory, and most importantly how you allow it to dry between uses.

Here are some of the biggest factors.

1. The Size of the Bar Matters

It sounds obvious, but a larger bar generally gives you more product to work with.

However, size alone doesn't determine longevity.

Two people can start with identical bars on the same day and finish them at completely different times simply because of how they're being used and stored.

That's why we prefer not to promise that a bar will last a specific number of showers.

2. Water Is the Biggest Part of the Equation

Soap is designed to interact with water.

That's exactly what you want while you're using it.

The problem is leaving your bar constantly exposed to water afterward.

If soap sits in a puddle, remains under a dripping showerhead, or stays on a surface where water can't drain away, the bar can remain soft between uses and may be used up more quickly.

A simple rule:

Wet it when you need it. Let it dry when you don't.

3. Give Your Soap Somewhere to Drain

Where you place your soap after showering can make a big difference.

Instead of leaving it on a flat surface where water collects underneath, place it somewhere that allows excess water to drain and air to circulate around the bar.

A soap bag can be useful for creating lather and holding smaller soap pieces that become difficult to handle.

Instead of throwing away the little pieces at the end of a bar, you can place them inside the bag and continue using them.

Just remember that the same drying principle applies:

Allow the bag and soap to dry thoroughly between uses rather than leaving them constantly wet.
